The Substitute Products extension enhances product lifecycle management in OroCommerce by adding inventory-level controls and customer-facing substitution logic. It introduces a dedicated “Archived” inventory status to mark products that are no longer available while keeping them in the catalog for historical or reference purposes.

In addition, the extension enables the assignment of substitute products that are automatically suggested or redirected to when a product becomes archived. This ensures customers remain engaged and are guided to alternative products, helping maintain sales continuity and reduce cart abandonment.

Substitute products can be configured to appear across key interfaces in the storefront, including the Shopping List view and Quick Order Form, ensuring substitution logic is consistently applied throughout the customer experience. In cases where no direct substitute is specified, the system may redirect to a selected web catalog node, maintaining contextual navigation.
